Dear Friends in the Northwest,
This Sunday is the Sunday before Lent, and this coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. Lent is a penitential period in the church’s calendar, originally a period of prayer and fasting for those preparing for baptism at Easter but also recognised as being of benefit to all Christians in preparation for Good Friday and then Easter. Thus, it is also a time of expectation, the simplicity of Lenten worship leading to the starkness of Good Friday, and being in contrast to the celebrations and rejoicing of Easter.
A reminder that I am proposing a Lent Course for 5 weeks in Lent, starting the week after Ash Wednesday and finishing the week before Holy Week, looking at The Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-12). Materials will be sent out with the weekly mailings. If anyone would like to join an online discussion group using Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype or similar (the actual method will depend in part on how many people wish to participate), please let me know. The timing of this would be flexible to suit those taking part.
Love and prayers
